Gianfranco Zola was surprised by how poor his West Ham United side defended on Saturday.

The Hammers had kept four clean sheets on the bounce at Upton Park, but they conceded two early goals against Bolton Wanderers in a damaging 2-1 loss.

“I was surprised because recently our home record was okay," Zola told Sky Sports. "We were not conceding goals, we were stronger than that - it came as a surprise.

"To be honest, I have to say after an international week you never know what you are going to get. They were better than us and took advantage of their opportunities. It's our fault.”
