Chelsea Football Club are ready to smash the British transfer record for Fernando Torres.

The Spanish international is currently contracted to Liverpool, but despite his obvious affection for the Merseyside club, he could be sold if they fail to make the top four this season.

Roberto Mancini’s Manchester City have already been heavily linked with the former Atletico Madrid man, with reports at the weekend claiming they are lining up a huge bid for him.

However, according to The Sun, Roman Abramovich is prepared to open his cheque book to rival the Eastlands club should the 25-year-old become available.

Torres is rated in the £50million bracket and whilst both Premier League sides would be able to afford this, it is likely he would move abroad if he does leave the Reds.
