Birmingham City Football Club have been encouraged in their bid to sign Kris Commons.

Alex McLeish will be given around £40million to spend on his Blues squad in the New Year, and it is believed the Scotland international winger is high on his list of targets.

As much as Nigel Clough would love to keep Commons in his Derby County squad, he admits any offers will be considered as the Championship club look to balance the books.

"We have to get the situation at this club back on an even keel," he said. "I was aware of this when I became boss and I'm sure our fans are clever enough to know too.

"A lot was spent before this year and the last part of our Premier League parachute money has gone. When offers come in, they'll be considered on their merits as always."
