Leicester snap up Wellens

Leicester have signed midfielder Richie Wellens from Championship rivals Doncaster Rovers.

The 29-year old former Blackpool and Oldham star was landed for an undisclosed fee, thought to be in the region of £1.2million.

Wellens, who joined Rovers on a free transfer from Oldham Athletic two years ago, held talks yesterday with Leicester manager Nigel Pearson.

The Foxes initially lodged a £1m bid for the player in May but that was rejected by Rovers chairman John Ryan.

Wayne Brown, Jack Hobbs, Astrit Adjarevic, Robbie Neilson, Chris Weale and Dany N'Guessan have also been signed in a busy summer for the Foxes as they gear up for their Championship return.

Wellens told the BBC: "My time at Doncaster has probably been the best two years of my career.

"We have had success and last year we finished 14th, which was a big success for us. To be honest, I am gutted.

"I didn't want to leave and I wasn't looking to leave but as soon as I learned that a club like Leicester were willing to come in and pay the money that Doncaster felt they would want for me - I went down and spoke to them and I couldn't really say no to be honest."

"I think that the move suits both parties. Sean (O'Driscoll - Doncaster boss) can now go out and get some players in and he also gets me off of the wage bill. I get to move to a big club and, obviously, more money as well. I can now play in front of 25/30,000 fans every week."

Meanwhile Leicester manager Pearson has not ruled out further additions to the squad despite their signing spree.

He told the Leicester Mercury, "I don't know if there'll be one or two coming in and there might be one or two going.

"If we add more, that will be great. If we don't, we go with the squad we have, which is more than capable.

"I can't see why we can't do well and surprise a few people.

"Promotion is always an aim but, if you look at expectation, we're in a slightly different situation. That doesn't mean you can lower your sights"
