Steven Pienaar’s proposed return to Everton has hit a snag.

The South African made a name for himself in England at Goodison Park, before he left the Merseyside club for Tottenham Hotspur in January 2011.

Pienaar failed to make an impression at White Hart Lane and after just 12 months, he was sent back to the Toffees on loan for the remainder of last season.

The 30-year-old was expected to make the move permanent this summer, but the appointment of Andre Villas-Boas at Spurs has forced a rethink.

The Portuguese coach was keen to sign the midfielder for Chelsea last summer, and is now likely to offer the player the chance to remain in the capital.
