Javier Mascherano is remaining coy over his future at Liverpool Football Club.

Rafael Benitez has made no secret of his desire to keep the Argentine international at Anfield, with Spanish giants Barcelona ready to pounce should he appear to be on his way out.

The Reds boss is confident Mascherano will shortly sign a new deal on Merseyside, but the player appears to be less than convinced about his immediate future.

“I do not know what the situation is," he said. "They have approached us to discuss a new contract and my agent will have a meeting in the next few days with representatives of the club.

"The reality is that I am very happy at Liverpool and that I want to know what the club's plans are and we will see if, at this point, I can renew my contract.

"It is not that I feel more settled now than I did in the summer. I have always felt at home at Liverpool and everyone at the club has treated me very well. There is nothing more to say.”
