Blackburn Rovers list O’Neil as major target
03:00 PM 18 January, 2010
Blackburn Rovers Football Club would love to take Gary O’Neil this January.

A 2-0 win over Fulham on Sunday has eased Rovers relegation fears for the time being, but Sam Allardyce knows he still needs more quality in his squad.

The Ewood Park chief has made O’Neil a major target for the winter window, and he is said to be confident Middlesbrough will let him leave for the right price.

However, Allardyce knows he must sell before he can make a bid for the midfielder, and he has two weeks to find a buyer for, most likely, Benni McCarthy.

The striker is keen to quit the Lancashire club for regular first team football to secure his place in the South Africa squad for the World Cup Finals, and Rovers want £2.5million for his signature.

Why is Allardyce after a midfielder when we are in need of a strike? What's more, why would he want to sell Benni, our best striker against Fulham (and one of our best usual strikers aswell), to sign him? I think that rather than buying a midfielder we should buy a decent striker like Gudjohnson, who we have been linked with, and by selling some dead weights like Khizanishvili, Andrews and Treacy etc.
