Scunthorpe have signed Hibernian centre-back Rob Jones.

The Hibs skipper has completed a move thought to be worth around £350,000, which could rise to £500,000. the actual mount is thought to have broken Scunthorpe's transfer record.

The 6ft 7in defender has penned a three-year deal and becomes manager Nigel Adkins' third addition of the summer.

Nottingham Forest, Bristol City and Derby County were all also rumoured to be interested in signing the former Stockport County and Grimsby Town defender.

Jones made more than 100 appearances for Hibernian, scoring 12 goals in all competitions. He captained them to their first trophy in 16 years in 2007 when they beat Kilmarnock 5-1 in the final of the Scottish League Cup.

Hibernian chairman Rod Petrie told hibs.co.uk: "Rob leaves with all our best wishes. Rob has led by example on and off the pitch.

"We could have asked for nothing more from him than the professionalism, commitment and leadership he demonstrated, particularly after the distractions in the transfer window last January.

"I would like to thank Rob for all that he has done for Hibernian Football Club and to extend the club's best wishes to him and his family and to wish him continuing success in his football career in the English Championship."

Jones's agent said, Gill said: "Rob has signed for Scunthorpe, he wanted to move back down south for family reasons and he's delighted that the deal has gone through but he feels very strongly that Hibs will always hold a very special place in his heart.

"The fans were especially good with Rob and he will always remember the support that they gave to him but the time has come for him to move on and he wishes Hibs and their fans all the very best for the future."

Jones told the Iron's official website, "I wouldn't have moved to the club if I didn't think it could stay in the Championship. It feels great to sign for Scunthorpe United. It's nice to be back in England and in an area which is familiar after my time at Grimsby."

"I wouldn't necessarily say where the club is was a factor behind the move, it's where the club is going. I came down on Wednesday and the move just felt right for me. The right noises came from the football club. I was interested in coming here and I've now cemented that."

Meanwhile Scunthorpe are still chasing the signature of York City prospect Adam Boyes.

The 18-year-old striker has already held talks with Iron manager Nigel Adkins but terms reportedly still need to be agreed through his agent.

A fee has been agreed between the clubs for the player.

Also Iron boss Nigel Adkns is due to give young keeper Josh Lillis permission to depart on a season-long loan.
