Shrewsbury manager Paul Simpson was in philosophical mood following their last-gasp, League Two play-off final defeat to Gillingham.
Simeon Jackson's second-half, stoppage-time winner sent the Gills to League Two and Simpson admitted the Shrews had not been at their best.
"I don't think over the 90 minutes we played to the level we are capable of and it's a massive disappointment on a stage like we have had today that we haven't performed.
"We had some half chances but first half we didn't play. We didn't get the ball, we didn't cause problems. Second half, yes we were better but still not to the level we are capable of and we must improve on that.
"We talked all season about the finest little margins that will make us successful or will cost us.
"The smallest margin today has cost us, we didn't win the header, we didn't clear our lines and it unfortunately cost us on a big stage."
