Chris Barker has signed a new contract at Southend United Football Club.

The Shrimpers captain was due to become a free agent this summer, but he has committed his immediate future to the club by signing a new one-year deal.

"I've really enjoyed my time at Roots Hall so I am obviously pleased to be staying," Barker told the club's official website "We were all disappointed not to get promoted last season.

"However, I think the experience of that will probably do the younger players some good in the long run and I remain as hungry as ever to get promoted this season."
