Stoke City boss jumps to Shawcross defence
Stoke City Football Club boss Tony Pulis has leapt to the defence of Ryan Shawcross.
The 22-year-old was sent off against Arsenal for a foul on Aaron Ramsey, which resulted in the Wales international suffering a horrific leg break which some have described as career-threatening.
Arsene Wenger has made no secret of his distaste of the challenge, but Pulis insists Shawcross, who left the field in tears, doesn’t have a malicious bone in his body.
"It is a bad challenge but I know Shawcross, I signed him as a 19-year-old,” he said. "He has got no bad blood in him and there is no way in a million years he would ever go out to hurt anybody.
“I really mean that. Everyone else at this football club sends their condolences on the incident, we wish him well for a speedy recovery and as a fellow Welshman I am devastated.
"But Ryan has come off the pitch broken-hearted, met his mum straightaway and gone straight home. For me the game is insignificant, the incident has really spoiled it."
The Gunners went on to win the game 3-1 thanks to a late Cesc Fabregas penalty and a Thomas Vermaelen tap-in, having earlier trailed to an eighth minutes Danny Pugh goal.
