Sunderland striker continues to stake England claim
Sunderland Football Club’s Darren Bent was on target again on Saturday.
The striker hit a hat-trick in the 4-0 win over Bolton Wanderers in midweek, and this time he notched a brace as the Black Cats beat Birmingham City 3-1.
This has led to Steve Bruce championing Bent’s name as a possible inclusion in Fabio Capello’s England squad for the World Cup Finals in South Africa.
“He's had a fantastic first season," Bruce told Sky Sports. "Twenty-one goals with eight games to go is a fantastic return from the kid in a team that's been struggling for a while.
“To keep on scoring like he has is a fantastic achievement and I hope he carries it on. As I have said repeatedly, he has to be in with a chance to go to South Africa - he's a goalscorer.”
