Tranmere have signed former Liverpool midfielder John Welsh on a two-year contract from Hull.

Welsh, 25 began his career at Liverpool and made his debut at the age of 18 , he made seven appearances for the reds in the 2004/5 campaign and has also represented England for the under 21's.

He joined Hull in the 2005/06 campaign and last season he spent time on loan at Carlisle and Bury.

New Tranmere boss John Barnes, "It is great to have a player of John's quality in the squad.

"He is a hard-working central midfielder, a good tackler and distributor of the ball.
