McCarthy wanted £7million Manchester City star
10:30 AM 04 February, 2010
Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club were in for Adam Johnson last month.

The 22-year-old winger was one of the most sought after players in England outside of the Premier League, especially as his Middlesbrough contract was winding down.

Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey has revealed he tried to lure Johnson to Molineux, but the player instead opted for Manchester City, who paid £7million for his signature.

“We got permission to speak to Johnson and we made the best offer, which would have broken our transfer record, paying a lot more than Manchester City,” he told the Express & Star.

“We decided to make an early commitment to Adam because he could have been here for the next 10 years. But he decided the City opportunity was just too good to turn down.”
