5-7-11: Brighton boss Gus Poyet has captured Peterborough striker Craig Mackail-Smith for a transfer fee of £2.5m, which could rise to £3.25m.
Poyet said: “Craig will be a key player for us. He was the best player in League One last season, he scored the most goals, he scored in the play-off final and he’s got everything we need to make our strike-force one of the best.
“He is a striker who scores goals and you will never see a player who matches his work-rate - it’s unbelievable.
“He is also energetic and powerful and that will rub off on the rest of the team.
“Craig is a very clever player all around the penalty area. He can hold the ball up, even though he is not the biggest, he always plays off the shoulder of the last defender, he is quicker than he looks and he can score with his right foot, left foot and his head.
“He is a player that we can build the team around which is why I was so keen to bring him here. When I first sat down with the chairman in the summer Craig was at the top of my list.
“It’s also very pleasing that we have signed him despite interest from some, big, big teams.
“To bring in a player of his standard is unbelievable. I am very, very happy.”
