Experienced defender Ian Harte is close to signing a deal with Carlisle.

Harte joined the Cumbrians towards the end of last season, making two appearances as they narrowly avoided relegation.

Abbott today told News & Star Sport: "We're pretty close to agreeing something with Ian which is great news. He enjoyed his time with us and I’m really confident he will sign.

"I want good players like him to spread good principles like that to other players so we can make sure we can drive the club forward.

"Ian isn't someone who wants to come for the ride. He is a very, very good player and his organisational skills, experience and quality on the ball will be a huge asset to us.

"He sees things happening far quicker than other players at this level and his game will get better as he gets games."
