Wenger hoping Liverpool land £8million Barry
12:00 PM 14 May, 2009
Arsene Wenger is watching Gareth Barry’s proposed move to Liverpool Football Club with interest.

Last summer the Aston Villa midfielder looked destined to join the Anfield club, but Rafael Benitez’s board refused to stump up the £18million asking price.

The knock-on effect of this was Xabi Alonso remained on Merseyside just as the Gunners were lining up an offer, and the Spaniard has produced a number of fine performances this season.

Twelve months on and Barry, out of contract next summer, could be available for as little as £8million, and Benitez is expected to make a fresh bid for him.

Wenger is believed to be watching this situation with interest, as he will attempt to take Alonso for around £14million if Liverpool land the England international from Villa.

Let's get real guys. Rafa is not going to sell Alonso for 14 million after the season he has just had and he will buy Barry probably for around 10 million.

both players would be a great signing for arsenal and although i believe alonso to be a better player it is more important that we get the right type of player, so barry would probably be the better option as he will hold the midfield better than alonso and is a better tackler. 8 million would be a good price.

Wenger definitely needs to buy Barry - £8m for England's holding midfielder, a position we've been crying out for. We already have plenty of attacking options but put Barry behind Cesc, with Arshavin on the left & Theo on the right & we'll be in business

When denied space to run, Theo becomes invisible. It appears as if speed is his only asset, until he meets Evra or Maluda. Theo lacks creativity. My take is Arshavin left, Rosicky right, Nasri & Fabregas in the middle. Upfront we could have Eduardo and RVP. Vela should get more opportunities to play as central striker

Benitez would only buy Barry as a addition to the liverpool squad mainly for his versatility CM, LM, LB and at a push CB. However he is not in xabi's class in terms of passing or dictating the pace of a game. XABI AINT GOING NOWHERE NOT AFTER LFC FANS VOTED HIM PLAYER OF THE SEASON.

Why doesnt wenger just stop smoking pot and realize signing barry for 8mill will pay much more than sigining alonso for double the price, alonso is more of a passer and we dont need that as the whole team is cursed with apssing...barry is a ball getter with lots of experienca not to mention leadership qualities

Selling Alonso and buying Barry,at same time, will be grave mistake LFC title ambitions. They are both midfielders, but of diferent type.

buy barry and keep alonso and i don't know what drugs wenger is smoking if he thinks he can get alonso for 14mill!! we would not accept anythign less than 18 last year and he is not running out of his contract and after his performances this year his value should have gone up not down.

Benitez has lost his marbles!!! Alonso should stay at Anfield... just buy Arjen Robben for the left wing and Ledley King for the Back. Sell Dossena, Babel, ElZhar, Ngogg, Lucas, not key players like Alonso. Now he wants to buy Forlan and David Silva....

Alonso will most probably stay, but if he leaves it will be to Real Madrid. Wenger has more chance of tempting Barry to Arsenal then Alonso.
