Swansea City have made an official bid to speak to Gary Speed about the possibility of becoming their new manager.

The former Wales international is on the shortlist to replace Wigan-bound Roberto Martinez after a spell spent learning his trade under Kevin Blackwell.

39-year-old Speed has one year left on his current Bramall Lane deal.

Speaking recently, Speed had played down talk of a move to the Liberty Stadium, saying: "Kevin Blackwell has brought me into the fold and I've learnt a lot off him as a coach and it's been a great experience for me learning the ropes.

"So I'm there next season as a coach."
