Dirk Kuyt has urged Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano to remain at Liverpool.

Spanish international Alonso is wanted by Real Madrid, whilst the Bernabeu club’s fierce rivals, Barcelona, are keen to land Mascherano.

However, as Rafael Benitez’s side look to build on their title charge of last season, Kuyt believes both midfield players are key to their chances this term.

“It’s really good to have them back and it’s good to see all the other lads also,” the Dutch international is quoted as saying on Tribal Football.

“We have a very good team which we showed last year and now we want to improve in the coming season and hopefully we can do that.”
