Flirty forward has got some nerve!
10:00 AM 24 July, 2009
Flirty forward Emmanuel Adebayor has got some nerve blaming Arsenal fans for driving him out of the club he used to "love".

It won't be lost on Arsenal fans that on his arrival at Manchester City, Adebayor immediately mentioned the word "love" and his new club in the same sentence in his first press call!

We've all heard of love at first sight, but how can it be explained? Did he always fancy himself in light blue? Has he got all the albums Oasis have ever produced? Could it possibly, and I know this sounds very cynical, have something to do with wonga? Well, there has to be some explanation. Adebayor would have us believe now that Arsenal fans drove him out.

Adebayor complained to The Independent: "The way the fans behaved towards me was not nice at all. I can't understand why they were after me. I did my best for them and I was very happy there."

That begs the question, why was Adebayor's effort not in evidence last season? I'm not a person who often accuses players of not trying, but the Togo international seemed exceptionally lazy last season - a mere shadow of his former self, the campaign before.

He added: "I scored 30 goals in a season - it's not my fault that Milan, Barcelona or Real Madrid wanted to sign me."

Well mate, you didn't get 30 goals last season. If you're only as good as your last game and you don't play, what does that say about you? Adebayor wasn't injured yet was left out of the team. Surely the striker then knew his future lay elsewhere? I simply can't buy into the idea that he only discovered he was on the way out when he returned for pre-season training. Adebayor claims he was told by his agent Stephane Courbis that Arsenal boss Arsène Wenger wanted to talk.

"I met him [Wenger] in his dressing room," Adebayor said. "He told me: 'You can leave'. I said: 'Why do you want me to leave now? Why do you want to sell me?' At the end of the day I find out the club – Arsenal – need money and I'm the target."

Sounds a bit far-fetched, but we won't hear the other side of the story as Wenger is too dignified to spills the beans on Adebayor. He only wishes him well.

Meanwhile, Adebayor continued: "In any summer, Barcelona try to sign Cesc Fabregas. But the fans never turned on him."

Let me explain Emmanuel. Are you sitting comfortably? Right, can you tell me when Cesc ever compared Barcelona's interest in him to being fancied by Beyoncé? Or Shakira? Or even Susan Boyle (which might be more relevant if it was another British club showing interest)?

Of course, a lot of Arsenal fans won't forgive Adebayor's comments in April, when he told ESPN: "I am happy playing for this club and to be honest I am happy AC Milan, one of the legendary clubs in the world, were looking at me.

"For me that must be something special. It is like a boy being told Beyoncé is looking for them."

Despite, these comments, Arsenal fans didn't really get on Adebayor's case. After all, there was a European Champions League semi-final against Manchester United at Old Trafford to think about. Perhaps Adebayor should have been thinking more about that too, some might say.

But the bottom line is Adebayor is now part of Arsenal's history. He will be considered a one-season wonder at the club, but I wonder how many fans will be brave enough to suggest Adebayor's not capable of scoring 30 goals again.

The point is, history has a habit of repeating itself. Based on that, Manchester City could get a good season out of Adebayor before he starts flirting with his next port of call. Just imagine if Jay-Z and Beyoncé bought an MLS franchise and invited Adebayor over! I reckon he'd be over there as quick as you can "Bootylicious"!

When will the Directors of this club see they will have to pay wages to match the other top 4 clubs,if we keep going as we are we will soon found that Arsenal will be out of the top 4. Ihate to say this but i think its time to do the same as Chelsea and let some one invest some money then and only then maybe we will win somthing.

I'd say buy him. Pavlyuchencko's on the same wave length as Arshavin, as we've seen when Russia play. £13.5m could be a bargain, though I must admit Pavlyuchenko's not known for his work rate.

Joe, Could not agree more. As a life long Arsenal fan i follow the theory "In Arsene we Trust". We do not want players who have the good season start asking for more and more money or they will leave which is as you say what he will do when he does have a good season and we all know he has it in him but as with Anelka, its all about the money as to why he left. Last year he wanted out and made it clear in tv interviews he did, so why would we want him? why should we pay our money every week to watch him walk about the pitch, mostly off-side i would add, sulking cos he is not loved by the very fans he wants away from? I am glad he is gone and he is now Man Citys problem and even if he does score 30 goals next season, all he will do is bring the dressing room down as he did at Arsenal and that is why Arsene doesnt want him. Play for the shirt, not just the money!!! To hear him say he loves Man City is a joke, he loves money and clearly did not want to play in Europe next year, how many professionals move to clubs so they CAN play in europes top comp? and he moves the other way? You work it out. maybe they will try and get in the top four and best of luck to them but MAYBE is a massive word in Football. Cant wait to see the newspapers in January saying "ADE TO AC MILAN". See ya Ade, dont let the door hit you in the vagina on the way out!!!

Thanks for your comments Gooner 24/7. You're right to point out that "maybe" is a massive word in football. Mark Hughes may be a good manager, but is he a top 4 boss? The jury's out until he proves it, but he may have his work cut handling all the egos he's expensively assembled at Man City! Only time will tell!

nice bit of reporting joe, i have to agree with you fully. i for one am glad to see the back of him. yes, he did have a good 07/08 season but he seemed to get just a little to big for his boots & last season he was dreadful. the plus side is, £22 million profit on a player that in my opinion we won't really miss & won't be to difficult to replace.

Thanks BG. I agree with you it's a more than decent profit, but I was a bit alarmed when Wenger said Rosicky and Eduardo can replace Adebayor. Both his "replacements" are very different players to Ade and both are injury-prone. I'd rather Wenger brought somebody in who has Adebayor's raw pace, power and aerial ability (though not his attitude!) as I'm not 100% convinced about Bendtner (even though he has improved a lot and may do so again this forthcoming season).
