Did Arsenal miss a trick in not bidding for Peter Crouch?
11:45 AM 31 July, 2009
Rob Daniels believes Peter Crouch would have been a decent signing for Arsenal.

The England international left Portsmouth for Tottenham Hotspur in a £9million deal last week, and Fans FC reader Rob believes the Gunners made a mistake in not bidding for the player.

“First of all, let me say I am firmly and utterly in the ‘In Arsene We Trust’ camp,” starts Rob. “And I back his decision to get shut of Emmanuel Adebayor...in fact, he should have done it last summer.

“But no matter what we may think of Manchester City’s new striker, and regardless of what Le Boss may say to the contrary (at least in public), we DO need to replace him.

“Klaas-Jan Huntelaar would be great...for my money, Luis Fabiano would be better. But the problem with these two is...how long would it take them to get used to life in the Premier League?

“We need someone who can come in and make an instant impact, because as Manuel Almunia admits, we need to hit the ground running when the new season begins.

“And so I am going to say it. I am going to say something which I know 99.9% of Arsenal fans will disagree with. I’m going to say we should have bid for Peter Crouch.

“He would have instantly provided the presence we will miss in Adebayor, his goalscoring record is impressive, and we know that, unlike Adebayor, he would have given everything to the cause.

“At £9million he is also reasonably priced, he also has experience of playing for a Big Four club (Liverpool), and he has scored goals in the Champions League...something he will not be doing at White Hart Lane. I might be wrong, only time will tell, but I think Crouch would have done a job at the Emirates Stadium.”

No, I too would have liked us to have gone for Crouch - you have to look away from the goals and more to the percieved threat - if multiple defenders are marking him to counter his aerial threat that leaves space for Fabregas, Walcott, Arshavin, Gallas, etc to hurt them. Saying that he has got quick feet and a very good touch for a tall man, although Bentner is catching up. Anyone been following Henri Lansbury and his exploits with the England under 19's? both he and Sanchez Watt are looking very good for maybe early next year. BTW, Toure was never the same player after the maleria (sadly, but we still love him), and Adebayor had one good season but does not comprehend the offside rule, and has a god complex (watch Togo in the next African Cup of Nations - he thinks he's Pele). In Wenger we trust.
