Sunderland battle Hammers for €8.4million defender
10:15 AM 05 August, 2009
Sunderland and West Ham United have been linked with John Mensah.

The Ghana international defender is expected to leave French side Lyon this summer, just twelve months after joining the club from Rennes in an €8.4million switch.

Steve Bruce and Gianfranco Zola have been linked with the 26-year-old, who admits he would relish the opportunity to pit his wits in the English Premier League this season.

"It is great to be linked to Premier League clubs,” Mensah, who has over 50 caps for his country, told skysports.com. "My past season with Lyon was not good and I hated to be injured.

“But I am fit now and raring to go, either at Lyon or the Premier League. I am aware of the interest, but nothing is agreed yet, it was always an ambition to play in the Premier League, so let's wait and see."
