O'Neill targets vital Portsmouth scalp
06:30 PM 13 October, 2008
Aston Villa Football Club must win this weekend, according to Martin O'Neill.

The Midlands side have started the season well but were well outclass in their last outing against Chelsea, making the visit of Portsmouth an absolute must-win in the eyes of their manager.

"I'm delighted with the attitude of the side and I'm delighted with the way we have been playing," O'Neill old AVTV. "But Chelsea's performance last weekend is where we need to get to.

"That's what we want to aspire to otherwise it is pointless being in the Premier League. That's the standard you have to achieve and it's getting there on a regular basis.

"In fairness to us, I don't think many teams would have lived with Chelsea in that first half. But by the same token, it doesn't mean that you just down tools and have your own mini league - not at all.

"This is where we want to be and expect to be. We were on the up and then suddenly we're dealt a real severe lesson. You then have to pick yourselves up and go again.

"Portsmouth becomes absolutely vital. They had a stodgy start but they have won the last couple of games and they are flying again. And they are capable of scoring goals."
