Aston Villa favourites to steal Distin
11:30 AM 21 August, 2009
Aston Villa Football Club are favourites to land Sylvain Distin this summer.

Martin O’Neill is eager to sign an experienced central defender before the transfer deadline, having lost Martin Laursen to retirement at the end of last season.

Although Portsmouth are desperate to hang on to Distin, he only has twelve months remaining on his deal and is stalling over the offer of a new contract.

With other interested parties, Liverpool and Manchester City, looking elsewhere, The Times claim Villa are in pole position to land the 31-year-old, who is rated at around £3million.

Every season MON complains that the squad is too small then he gets rid of or loses more than he brings in. We have needed a centre back and captain since Laursen was injured and now the season has started and we are still trying to "muddle through". There are players out there to be bought - Distin, Upson, Collins and we have signed which defender? Beye... It is a bottom six finish unless at least two defenders are signed and even now it will take weeks to get them settled in. He's not the Messiah, he's just... another average manager

oneils lost the plot. it saddens me to say he has got to go.never thought i would agree with tony butler but unfortunatly everything he has said bout the messiah is right.cant handle expensive players, tactically nieve too.makes one substitution and changes at least three positions?sorry and i hate to slag him off but lets get real and stop being one eyed.at present we are relegation materiel ever since february

Totally agree! the man hasn't got a clue! Excuse after excuse! Buy a decent forward to play alongside Milner (Down the middle) & get rid off Heskey, Carew, & Agbonlahor! (They're simply not good enough!) Matt Taylor (Bolton in midfield) & get rid of Shorey, Sidwell, Beye, (Bring back Cahill & Angel!)
