Benitez to blame for Alonso’s Liverpool exit?
07:00 PM 02 September, 2009
Is Rafael Benitez ultimately to blame for Xabi Alonso’s exit from Liverpool Football Club.

Last summer the Reds manager was actively looking to offload the Spanish playmaker, as he wanted to add Aston Villa’s Gareth Barry to his squad as a replacement.

Barry eventually stayed in the Midlands, meaning Alonso also remained at his club, but this summer the former Real Sociedad star has returned to La Liga in a £30million switch to Real Madrid.

There is no doubt that the 27-year-old will be missed and many fans were furious to see him be sold, but the player has revealed it was difficult to stay after what happened last summer.

"After five years I have experienced wonderful nights at Anfield, to have experienced the support of probably the best fans in the world,” Alonso told Sky Sports News.

"Last summer the club proposed me that I might have to be sold to find funds for new players. It was a difficult decision or difficult moment to accept that.

“I accepted that as a professional and that moment probably changed my mind and I thought that maybe from that moment that maybe it was time for a change."

I thought this year was a golden opportunity for the Reds as our biggest rivals lost their hitman !Now I`m afraid i can`t see LFC a title winning side..what a miss you Alonso..a world class midfield organiser has been wasted..I have no faith in this so called Benitez or the other couple of pricks..I think they don`t recognise how huuuuuure Liverpool FC is !!

Benitez and Liverpools owners are too blame. Stick to shopping at pound stretcher thats all you can afford until Laurel and Hardy sell the club on.

Benitez to blame as well as Liverpools owners. They failed to get Barry to satrt with because they failed to meet the price for a player they coveted and upset Alonso in the process. The following year were not qucik enough to deal with it and lost Alonso albeit for more money. I am not sure Aquilani will stand up to teh rigours of the EPL so all in all a complet cock up by Liverpool management and owners leaving their fans with another missed opportunity. Lessons should be learned - pay up if you want someone elses assets or shop where you can afford too - pound stretcher.

Yeah dont think Barry is gonna be nowhere nice as what Alonso had done for liverpool just hope this Aqulini does well could have done with creavitiy player Maybe Like Augusto would have been better and cheaper instead off David Silva maybe sell Kuyt or push him upfront and young quality defender as possible replacement for Carragher like Kompany or Cristio from Juve/Genona unless we get those 2 next season at least we will be struggling just praying the italian comes in does better what Alonso did
