Sir Alex doubts Rooney can beat Sir Bobby’s record
12:00 PM 08 September, 2009
Sir Alex Ferguson doubts Wayne Rooney will overtake Sir Bobby Charlton as the all-time leading goalscorer for Manchester United Football Club.

The former Everton star has started the season with four goals in as many games to take his tally to 102 for the Reds, which is still some way off Charlton’s total.

"It'll be very tough," Ferguson told Inside United magazine. "Sir Bobby's record is 249 goals, so at this stage of Wayne's career I'd say he'll have to do very well to get anywhere near that."

Whilst it is a huge ask of Rooney, he is still only 23-years-old, so if he plays for United until he is 30, he would need to average at least 20-goals-a-season to stand a chance.
