Roberto Martinez still hopes to lure Scott McDonald from Celtic Football Club.

The Wigan Athletic boss tried to take the 26-year-old striker from Parkhead on a season-long loan deal earlier this month, an option the Bhoys dismissed out of hand.

However, after McDonald’s impressive start to the season, having scored twice in three games, Martinez is likely to make a renewed bid for the Australian international in January.

"There were many players we showed interest in and Scott McDonald was one of them," he said. "I wanted to add to the squad with a couple of signings as we are a bit thin on numbers.

“We have our targets and we will carry on following and assessing them because if you are going to do that then I think it is vitally important that assessment continues.”
