Was Barry the better choice of captain for Manchester City?
02:00 PM 10 September, 2009
Kolo Toure has been confirmed as Manchester City’s captain, but should Mark Hughes have looked at another of his summer signings for the role?

The Ivory Coast international, a £14million capture from Arsenal, has been given the armband following the sale of Richard Dunne to Aston Villa on deadline day.

Toure was vice-captain of the Gunners and was a frontrunner to succeed Thierry Henry as the club’s leader, only for Arsene Wenger to opt for Cesc Fabregas instead.

Whilst there is no doubt the defender is a capable captain, there is a strong feeling at Eastlands that Hughes should instead have given the role to Gareth Barry.

The England international was a hugely inspirational captain during his time at Aston Villa, and he has started his career with City in impressive form.

The fact he is English doesn’t come into it as Toure has been here for many years, but would it be better for the Blues to have selected a midfielder as captain?

This isn’t always the case (John Terry for Chelsea, Tony Adams for Arsenal, for example), but when you have a player like Barry, he would have been ideal to lead a new team.
