Not even Arsene Wenger expected Thomas Vermaelen to settle in England so quickly.

The Arsenal manager paid Ajax £10million for the Belgian international in the summer, and the player has already looked like another bargain buy from the French tactician.

Not only does Vermaelen look a quality central defender, but he has also found the knack at the other end of the pitch, where he has already scored four goals.

"Let's be honest for once. I thought he could adapt quickly but maybe not as quickly as that!” said Wenger, after the 23-year-old grabbed a brace in the win against Wigan Athletic.
