Would Cattermole have kept Middlesbrough up?
04:00 PM 09 October, 2009
Would Middlesbrough still be a Premier League club had they kept Lee Cattermole?

The Riverside Stadium club sold the midfielder to Wigan Athletic for £3.5million last summer, and he had a superb season whilst Boro slipped out of the top-flight by three points.

"There is no question he had a very good season at Wigan, but sometimes a player makes that kind of progress when he moves clubs,” boss Gareth Southgate told the Evening Gazette.

"Lee wanted to move. We were not looking to sell, but Lee had been pushing for it. Things look different after the event, but one player doesn't keep you in the Premier division, or any division."

Cattermole has since left the DW Stadium to follow Steve Bruce to Sunderland, where he looks to push on press for a place in the England squad ahead of the World Cup Finals.
