Avram Grant wanted to return to football with New York Red Bulls, and not Portsmouth.

The former Chelsea boss has returned to Fratton Park as director of football, but his American-based agent, Don Barnett, has revealed he was in talks with the MLS side.

"Grant would make history in New York," he told the New York Times.

"With all the Jewish residents and expat Israelis in the area, coupled with his profile at Chelsea, he would have raised the profile of Red Bull to a higher level on and off the field.

"He wants the job but I guess he couldn't wait on them any longer."
