However, the Black Cats manager remains a huge fan of the 26-year-old, and reports claim he will make a fresh approach to take him to the Stadium of Light in January.

Figueroa has started all eight of Wigan’s games in the Premier League this season, as he establishes himself as an early favourite of coach Roberto Martinez.
