Wayne Rooney admits he wanted Cristiano Ronaldo to stay at Manchester United.

The Portugal international ended his sensational stint at Old Trafford when he moved to Real Madrid in the summer, in a world record transfer of £80million.

Rooney, who has taken the mantle from Ronaldo as United’s main man this season, admits he was disappointed when the former Sporting Lisbon star left for the Bernabeu.

“I'm not happy he left the club and I don't think any of us are," Rooney said in The Sun. "I'd prefer him to still be in the team if I'm being honest. He's a brilliant player, irreplaceable, the best player in the world - so no-one's happy he left."
