Gordon Strachan was appointed as Gareth Southgate’s successor at the Riverside Stadium earlier this week, and his priority is to land a new striker.

The Scot knows Phillips well from their brief time at Southampton together, and reports in the Daily Mail claim he could launch a bid for the veteran forward in the New Year.

The 36-year-old is a proven goalscorer in the Championship, and with Birmingham City set to splash the cash in January, he could find himself even further down the pecking order than he already is.
