Harry Redknapp has revealed he was offered the chance to sign Thomas Vermaelen, before the Belgian international joined rivals Arsenal Football Club.

The former Ajax ace has been superb for the Gunners following his £10million summer move, but Tottenham Hotspur’s Redknapp has revealed it could have all been so different.

"I was recommended him as a left-back but we were strong in that position,” he told The Mirror. "People who recommended him didn’t speak of him as a central defender.

“But Vermaelen has done very well. He and William Gallas look very solid at the back. He’s very strong at left back and in central defence as well."
