Sir Alex Ferguson won’t try and persuade Edwin van der Sar into signing a new contract with Manchester United Football Club.

The veteran Dutch goalkeeper is out of contract at the end of the season, but despite proving he is more than capable of continuing, Ferguson will let him make his own mind up over his future.

"He makes his own decisions about that. There is no point me trying to persuade a man of 38 that he can carry on or should finish,” he told the News of the World.

“He has his own thoughts on what he wants to do and what his future is. He just comes to me once a year and says he wants another contract and we'll stick with that."
