Newcastle United will make Matthew Kilgallon their big January signing, say reports.

Chris Hughton has been installed as permanent manager of the St James Park club, and he has been billed with the task of taking the club back to the Premier League at the first attempt.

As ever, a defender is high on the Magpies wanted list, and it is believed Kilgallon, who they tried to sign during the summer transfer window, is Hughton’s most wanted.

Sheffield United rejected a bid of £2.5million from Newcastle before the season started, but the Championship leaders hope to get him for £4million in January, according to The Sun.
