Jamie Carragher knows Manchester City consider Liverpool to be their route into the Premier League’s top four this season due to the Reds stuttering start.

Mark Hughes takes his Blues side to Anfield on Saturday knowing a win would put them four points clear of Rafael Benitez’s team, with a game in hand.

This would also be Liverpool’s sixth league defeat of a hugely disappointing season, and Carragher has told his pals they simply must see off the challenge from City.

"It is a massive test,” he told the official club website.

“They probably think they can maybe take our place in the top four because of the way we've started. It's up to us to show some fight and character to make sure that doesn't happen."
