Christoph Metzelder is a transfer target for Zenit St Petersburg.

The 29-year-old has made just 22 La Liga appearances since joining Real Madrid in the summer of 2007, due to a string of injury problems.

Metzelder is out of contract at the end of the current season, so Real may decided to offload him for a fee in the New Year rather than lose him for nothing in the summer.

It is being suggested that Zenit are plotting a bid to take him to Russia in January, although the player is believed to be willing to stay in Spain for the rest of the season in a bid to win a new deal.
