Regular Black Cats goalkeeper Craig Gordon faces a spell on the sidelines with a broken arm, although Steve Bruce still has Marton Fulop and Trevor Carson available.

However, it is being reported that the former Manchester United skipper wants to return to his old club to entice Foster on loan for the rest of the season.

The 26-year-old has fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford and is desperate for regular first team football in order to cement his England place for the World Cup Finals.
