Jose Enrique and Kieran Richardson could swap clubs during the New Year window.

Sunderland manager Steve Bruce is keen to sign a new left-back when the window opens, and he has been given little encouragement by Wigan Athletic for Maynor Figueroa.

It is believed his next target is Enrique, the Spanish player who is currently plying his trade at rival club Newcastle United in the Championship.

The Sunday Mirror claim the Black Cats face a job on their hands taking the defender from St James Park, but the Magpies would be willing to let him go in a straight swap for Richardson.

This is unlikely to appeal to the former Manchester United midfielder, though, who still has ambitions of making a late run for Fabio Capello’s England World Cup squad.
