The England international is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League, and fans will point to what happened to Newcastle United when they sold Shay Given last January.

However, the Londoners are struggling for cash at the moment, and it is thought Gianfranco Zola would use the cash to bolster a squad struggling at the wrong end of the table this season.

It is thought around £3million would be needed to persuade Huddersfield Town to part company with Smithies, who has been billed as a future England star of the future.
