Darren Fletcher believes mistakes were inevitable when Manchester United Football Club were forced to play midfielders in defence recently.

A spate of injuries meant the Reds were forced to play the likes of Fletcher, Michael Carrick and Ji-Sung Park at the back recently, with Patrice Evra the only fit first team defender.

United coped well mostly and are just two points off Chelsea at the top of the table, but the 3-0 defeat at Fulham came as little surprise to the Scotland international.

"It is okay in one-off games to have midfielders playing out of position,” said Fletcher. “When it goes to a run of games it is inevitable that mistakes are going to happen because it is not natural."
