Wigan Athletic Football Club have been left frustrated in their bid to sign Scott McDonald.

Roberto Martinez is keen to add the Australian international to his squad in a loan deal, but he has revealed Celtic are only willing to do business for a transfer fee.

"We did make an approach but it was turned down," he told the Scottish Daily Express. "We had wanted Scott on loan with a view to paying the full transfer in the summer.

"I think if they are to sell then they will want any transfer fee up front but we are simply not in a position to do that. I tried to get him in the last window but that was also turned down."
