Tottenham Hotspur defend Eidur swoop
06:52 PM 29 January, 2010
Harry Redknapp insists Tottenham Hotspur Football Club did no wrong in signing Eidur Gudjohnsen.

The Icelandic international looked to be on the brink of signing for West Ham United after undergoing a medical ahead of a proposed loan from Monaco.

However, Spurs nipped in to talk to Gudjohnsen and he agreed to join them instead, sparking outrage from the Hammers co-owner David Sullivan.

Redknapp has hit back at suggestions his club did wrong to take the 31-year-old from under the noses of their London rivals, insisting it was always down to what the player wanted.

"He's joined us and he's a player we've always admired," he said. "He's a player we have been chasing for a couple of weeks. It was his decision. I rang him.

“I left a message saying 'Eidur, if you are down the road with West Ham, (manager, Gianfranco) Zola and (assistant) Steve Clarke are friends of yours. Don't fall out with them.'

“I get on great with David Sullivan and I don't want any hassle with him either. But he (Eidur) came back and said 'It's my choice. I want to come to Tottenham.’”

to all you hammers, tough shit, ur a club thats never going to get into the top half of the table so why would a quality player like eidur come and play with a less than quality side like you. He has made a wise choice in spurs. this is a side thats got the best chance of breaking into the top 4. it was always a no brainer. deal with it.

at 31 yrs old eidur needs to be challenging for honours and not trying to save a mediocre club from relegation. who can blame him. who would you rather play with modric kranjcar and defoe or spector faubert and noble. easy choice. yids

Wow. Someones a bit bitter that West Hams our feeder club! Eidur knows the great players we have and that it will be hard to get in our team. Speaks volumes that rather than start all the time for West Ham he would rather sit on the bench for Spurs. Just read and you can see Eidur CHOOSE to come to us. It was HIS decsision...

Why go to a bottom of the league club when you can go to one currently occupying a top 4 position? Obvious choice... and as for Mr Piters comment, I think it say's it all when you can't even be bothered to type out full words!
