Manchester United Football Club manager Sir Alex Ferguson is delighted that Edwin van der Sar has signed a new contract.

The Dutch goalkeeper was due to become a free agent in the summer, but the 39-year-old has penned a new deal which keeps him at Old Trafford until the end of next season.

"Edwin's professionalism and dedication to his job and the way he looks after himself has given him the longevity in the game," Ferguson told the official club site.

"That longevity includes such great experience not just at United, but at Juventus, Ajax and on an international level. We are absolutely delighted he is continuing for another year."
