02:00 PM 15 March, 2010
Alan Smith is prepared to take a pay cut to stay at Newcastle United Football Club.

The former Manchester United midfielder was signed by the Magpies in the summer of 2007, and he still has two years remaining on his deal at St James Park.

However, talks are about to begin to extend his stay with the Magpies, and reports suggest he is willing to accept a pay cut to secure a long-term deal.

Smith, who has been appointed club captain under manager Chris Hughton, is said to be settle in the North East, and he plans to see out his career with the Championship leaders.

Give me a break? he refused to take one at Leeds, the would 'only' sign for SCUM when the Geordies were offering more. I would rather see Elland Road burn than have that greedy, disloyal get back.

Good for him, after the turmoil of his last few months at Scumchester United it's good to hear he's finally finding his feet somewhere. However, on a selfish, personal note I'm pretty sad that will put paid to my mad idea that he might've had a swansong with Leeds before too long.......damn!!!!!! Good luck to the lad and as a long time friend and fan I'm delighted that he hasn't disappointed me this season. Not all footballers are like John Terry and Ashley Cole! Thank the lord for that........
