The failure to sell Jason Roberts scuppered Ivelin Popov’s proposed transfer to Blackburn Rovers Football Club during the summer window.

The Premier League side had lined up the 22-year-old Gaziantepspor striker for a move to Ewood Park, but they were forced to scrap their interest when they couldn’t offload Roberts.

"We were expecting a bid for Jason Roberts,” chairman John Williams explained to the Lancashire Telegraph. “We covered our position with Ivelin Popov ready to come to Rovers.

"His club knew the deal was dependent on Jason leaving but in the end no bid came. Five strikers was never going to be an option, nor was letting Jason leave on a free."
