Crewe Alexandra Football Club failed with a last gasp bid to sign Jack Saville on Tuesday.

The 20-year-old has already impressed in League Two during a loan spell at Barnet this season, but he returned to Championship outfit Southampton earlier this week.

Alex have now revealed that they made a late bid to take Saville in a temporary deal on deadline day, but they couldn’t finalise the move before the window slammed shut.

A statement on Crewe's official website read: "The Alex coaching staff attempted to bring in defender Jack Saville on loan, but they just couldn't pull it off before the 11pm deadline."

Meanwhile, Saville has since been released by the Saints so he is available on a free transfer, but he looks certain to return to Underhill and sign a permanent deal.
