Arsenal Football Club are said to be closing on Jan Vertonghen.

Arsene Wenger is keen to land a new centre-half in the summer, as he looks to find a long-term partner for Belgian international Thomas Vermaelen.

And Vertonghen has played alongside the latter for his country and also at Ajax, where he will be down to the final twelve months of his contract in the summer.

It is believed Wenger is closing on a £10million deal for the 24-year-old, which could raise question marks over the long-term future of German ace Per Mertesacker.
